FULL CREATIVE PROCESS - PROTOSTAR HOMES
Building Trust Before the First Home Was Built
Creating the identity, digital presence, and launch strategy for a luxury home builder entering the Middle Tennessee market.
Project Overview
Protostar Homes was founded at a turning point. After more than 15 years of building luxury homes, the founder's longtime business partnership came to an end, creating an opportunity to build a new company with a new vision. While the team brought decades of construction expertise, the brand itself had no history, no recognition, and no public portfolio under its new name.
The challenge wasn't simply to design a logo—it was to create immediate credibility in a market where purchasing a home is one of the largest financial decisions a family will ever make.
As Creative Director, I developed the brand strategy, co-created the company name, designed the visual identity, led the website experience, shaped the messaging, and directed the overall launch of the brand.
1. The Challenge
Luxury homebuyers don't purchase based on aesthetics alone—they purchase confidence.
Although Protostar Homes was a newly established company, its leadership and construction team had spent more than fifteen years building high-end homes throughout Middle Tennessee. The brand needed to communicate that depth of experience without appearing like a startup trying to imitate an established builder.
The identity had to accomplish several goals simultaneously:
Establish trust from day one.
Reflect craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Appeal to luxury homeowners and real estate investors.
Create a flexible brand that could eventually expand beyond custom homes into larger residential communities.
3. Building a Brand That Inspires Confidence
The visual identity was designed to communicate trust, stability, and professionalism while maintaining a refined, contemporary aesthetic.
Blue became the primary brand color because it naturally conveys reliability and confidence. It also reflects the endless sky and the vastness of space, reinforcing the celestial inspiration behind the company's name. Combined with clean typography and a restrained visual system, the identity balances sophistication with approachability.
Rather than relying on trends, the goal was to create a timeless brand capable of growing alongside the company for years to come.
4. Creating a Cohesive Brand System
Rather than designing isolated marketing assets, I developed a complete identity system that could scale across every customer touchpoint.
The project included:
Brand strategy
Naming collaboration
Brand story
Logo design
Color palette
Typography
Website UX and creative direction
Website content strategy
Social media advertising
Billboard design
Brand messaging
Visual identity system
By maintaining consistency across digital and physical experiences, the company was able to present itself as an established luxury builder from its very first day in the market.
2. Strategy: Build a Story Before Building Houses
Rather than creating another construction company identity centered around tools, rooftops, or houses, we focused on something more meaningful: beginnings.
During our naming workshops, the founder described wanting a name that felt modern, timeless, and slightly mysterious. Together, we explored ideas beyond the construction industry and found inspiration in astronomy through NASA's research.
The word Protostar immediately stood out.
A protostar is the earliest stage in the life of a star—a moment full of energy and possibility before it shines at its brightest.
That idea became the foundation of the brand.
Just as a protostar marks the beginning of something extraordinary, purchasing a home often marks the beginning of a new chapter in a family's life. The company's name became more than a label; it became a narrative that connected the builder's craftsmanship with the aspirations of its clients.
Every creative decision that followed grew from this central idea.
5. Designing the Digital Experience
The website became the company's primary sales tool.
With no established reputation under the new brand, the website needed to answer questions before potential clients asked them. Every page was structured to reinforce expertise, communicate the building process clearly, and encourage prospective homeowners to begin a conversation.
My responsibilities included:
UX strategy and website architecture
Creative direction
Visual design
Messaging development with AI-assisted copy refinement
SEO-focused content planning
Ongoing design refinements after development
The site was developed in WordPress in collaboration with a web developer, allowing me to focus on the overall creative vision while ensuring the final experience matched the brand strategy.
To support long-term organic growth, I also introduced a blog strategy targeting search keywords related to custom home building and the Middle Tennessee market.
6. The Outcome
Protostar Homes launched with a complete brand ecosystem that accurately reflected the experience behind the company rather than the age of the business.
Today, the company is developing three luxury townhomes just minutes from Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Each residence offers approximately 3,200 square feet of living space and is expected to sell between $1.2 million and $1.8 million, positioning the company within one of Middle Tennessee's premium residential markets.
More importantly, the project demonstrates how thoughtful branding can bridge the gap between experience and perception. By translating years of craftsmanship into a compelling narrative and cohesive visual identity, Protostar Homes entered the market not as an unknown startup, but as a builder prepared to earn the confidence of discerning homeowners.
